Bay Ridge Elementary School
INTERNET ACCEPTABLE USE POLICY
Please read this document carefully before signing the attached Acceptable Use Agreement Page and returning it to the classroom teacher.
Internet access is available to students and teachers of Bay Ridge School. The Internet offers vast, diverse and unique resources to both students and teachers. Internet accessibility promotes educational excellence by facilitating resource sharing, innovation and communication.
The Internet is an electronic highway connecting thousands of computers all over the world and millions of individual participants. Students and teachers have access to:
1. *Email, video conferencing and virtual tours with people all over the world.
2. Information and news from a variety of public and private services as well as an opportunity to correspond with government agencies and scientists at research institutions.
3. Public domain software (freeware) and shareware of all types.
4. Discussion and/or News groups on topics ranging from Chinese culture to the environment to music and politics.
5. Access to many university library catalogs, the Library of Congress, ERIC and other databases.
With access to computers and people all over the world, also comes the availability of material that may not be considered to be of educational value in the context of the school setting. Bay Ridge has taken several precautions to restrict access to inappropriate information. These precautions start with students’ understanding of this Acceptable Use Policy coupled with the classroom instruction that they receive supervised during school hours and their computer usage is monitored. It is the student’s responsibility to not pursue material that could be considered offensive. As an added safeguard, all Bay Ridge computers with access to the Internet are filtered for inappropriate visual depictions in accordance with the Children’s Internet Protection Act. The filtering is provided through an Internet Service Provider, Maine School & Library Network (MSLN). However, despite the school’s attempt to ensure appropriate exposure, it is impossible on a global network to control all materials. A determined user may still discover controversial information. Bay Ridge firmly believes that the valuable information and interaction available on the worldwide network far outweighs the chance that users may procure material that is not consistent with the educational goals of the school.
Internet access is coordinated through an association of government agencies, regional, and state networks. The smooth operation of the network relies on the proper conduct of the end users who must adhere to strict guidelines. These guidelines are provided here so that users are aware of the network resources. If a school user violates any of the provisions, his or her privileges on the network will be terminated and future access may be denied.
INTERNET ACCEPTABLE USE POLICY
1. Acceptable Use: The initial purpose of the Internet was to support research and education in and among academic institutions in the U.S. by providing access to unique resources and the opportunity for collaborative work. Student use of the school’s Internet access should be in support of education, research and consistent with the educational objectives of Bay Ridge Elementary School. Use of another organization’s network or computing resource must comply with the rules appropriate for the network. Transmission of any material in violation of any federal or state law is prohibited. This includes, but not limited to, copyrighted material or material protected by trade secret. Use for commercial activities is generally not acceptable. Use for political lobbying is also prohibited. In addition, accessing, submitting, posting, publishing, forwarding, downloading, scanning or displaying materials that are defamatory, abusive, obscene, vulgar, sexually explicit, sexually suggestive, threatening, discriminatory, harassing, plagiarizing, and/or illegal is prohibited. Copying or downloading any software without the express authorization of the system administrator is also prohibited.
2. Privileges: The use of the school’s network is a privilege, not a right and inappropriate use will result in a cancellation of those privileges. The system administrators will deem what is appropriate use and their decision is final. Also, the system administrators may deny a student’s Internet access at any time as required. The administration, faculty and staff of Bay Ridge may also request for a student’s Internet access to be revoked or suspended.
3. Network Etiquette: Students are expected to abide by the generally accepted rules of network etiquette. These include, but are not limited to the following: Be polite.
a. Be polite. Do not get abusive in your messages to others.
b. Use appropriate language. Do not swear, use vulgarities or any other inappropriate language. Illegal activities are strictly forbidden.
c. Do NOT disclose, use, disseminate, or reveal personal identification such as your name, address, phone number, or e-mail address or those of other students or staff.
d. Note that email is not designed to be private. People who operate the system do have access to all emails. Messages relating to or in support of illegal activities will be reported to authorities.
e. Do not use the network in such a way that you disrupt the use of the network for other users. Unauthorized access, including so-called “hacking” and other unlawful activities by minors online is strictly forbidden.
f. All communications and information accessible via the network should be regarded as private property.
4. Security: Security on any computer is a high priority, especially when the system involves many users. If you feel you can identify a security problem on the network, you must notify a system administrator such as your Principal. Do NOT use another individual’s account. Attempts to log on to the network as a system administrator will result in cancellation of all user privileges. Any user identified as a security risk or having a history of problems with other computer systems may be denied access to the network.
5. Vandalism: Vandalism will result in cancellation of privileges. Vandalism is defined as any malicious attempt to harm or destroy data or computer equipment of Bay Ridge, Fort O’Brien or Whiting Village, another user, the Internet, or any agencies connected to the network. It also includes, but is not limited to, the uploading or creation of computer viruses or other malicious computer codes.
*Bay Ridge Students are not allowed to use email, instant messaging, Facebook, My Space or any other social network at school.
